Drinking window: 2018 – 2024 The 2016 Barbera d’Alba Fides is fabulous. Superripe dark cherry, pomegranate, rose petal and wild flowers are beautifully delineated in this plush, vibrant Barbera. Medium in body and impeccable in its balance, the Fides is a winner from Pio Cesare.
With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the 2016 Barbera d’Alba Fides offers a noticeable and heightened level of precision, focus and strength. The wine bursts open with dark and luscious fruit that makes a big impact on the senses. Blackberry, summer ripe cherry and black plum all rise to the top of the bouquet. In the mouth, the wine shows thick density and bright acidity. Only 6,000 bottles were made of this oak-aged Barbera.
ANNATA 2015
Fruit for the 2015 Barbera d’Alba Fides comes from the Colombaro vineyard (where Chardonnay is also planted) in Serralunga d’Alba. In fact, these vineyards are legally registered to produced Barolo and the name Fides (“faith”) is a nod to the hope and promise placed in the Barbera grape. This is a three-hectare plot that makes some 7,000 bottles per year. Yields are very low. The vines were planted in 1992 and the clone produces smaller berries and clusters. Indeed, the wine’s appearance is impenetrable and black as a result. The bouquet is full and generous, and the wine reveals its big bones in terms of mouthfeel.
